The $1500.00 Knife Shop
November 5, 2007 – 11:29 pmI am thinking about writing a book. It will be called the $1500.00 knife shop. The thing is, there is a book called the $50.00 knife shop that is a classic in the knife making community. I absolutely LOVE the book and mean no disrespect to the author, it just isn’t the type of thing that many folk need.
Here is the thing, the $50.00 knife shop does things with absolute junk. You spend a ton of time finding, changing, and screwing with things that many people could just go out and purchase. I find myself forced into a business decision to create another smithy here in Ohio. I want to do it with the bare minimum investment that I can make but get it up and running quickly. I am fairly sure I can have a wiz bang shop set up for about $1,500.00, complete with stock and coal. Much of what I need I already have, but can look up the prices for the point of the book.
On the other end of the spectrum from the $50.00 knife shop are books which discuss the creation of art knives. The equipment for doing knives of that caliber is often much, much more expensive than what the average Joe can afford. I think there is a need for something in the middle.
So do you think that if I explained my reverence for the $50.00 knife shop and how I think there is a void that my book would fill that people would get it.
