Drugs, Colombians, and Eminence, KY

A few of my readers might have noticed a reference or two about my family wanting to get out of Dodge. Actually, it is Columbus, OH. No offence to the Columbians (yep, that’s what we are) but we have come to the conclusion that even the small Big City life just isn’t for us.
There is an LLC in Kentucky that I have become involved with. I am not an owner, although I have offered to buy a share so I can further not only my support, but my involvement. It’s a start up, so I am not betting my lively hood on it and thus, the move is not based completely on that potential. We are planning to move one way or the other and if we feel secure with our involvement in that LLC, then that move will be to Eminence, Kentucky where the LLC is located.
Although the specific town is based on our involvement with that LLC, the love of Eminence and the surrounding area is not. Instead, we love the are for the people. Not only have we made some great acquaintances, the atmosphere in the town is very family oriented.
Like any other town, the parents of Eminence, Kentucky have their concerns. One of those concerns is why we love the area so well. When talking to local residents about he school system, we were warned against one school district because of their drug problem. It seems the kids there grow their own marijuana in the cornfields. Although this was mentioned as a deterrent, my wife and I thought of it as a good sign that the school district is healthy. Now how do we explain this to our children’s grandmother.
It’s not that we want our children growing marijuana in the corn fields, but after living in Columbus, Ohio for so many years we have to figure that if home grown marijuana is their biggest drug concern, well it’s gotta be a far side better than the crack cocaine riddled school system offered in Columbus, OH. In fact, it kind of reminds me of the town in which I have my earliest school memories; South Bend, Indiana
From what I understand, that town has grown some time since my school years. But when I think about grade school and junior high, I can’t remember knowing a thing about cocaine or pills other than what I saw on TV. Kids will be kids. They will explore and they will experiment, so while I would rather my children avoid recreational drugs until they are of such an age as to be able to make an informed and educated decision, I have to appreciate a place where their biggest expressed concern is what we used to call ditch weed. But how do I explain this to grandma?
One Response to “Drugs, Colombians, and Eminence, KY”
Growing marijuana in a cornfield pales in comparison to other things that kids can get involved with, I quite agree.
And shoot me if you will, (although I myself cannot partake safely) I believe that marijuana should be legalized.
Best wishes in Kentucky if you do move there. It sounds like a great place in general and the name of the town in particular is made of awesome.
