A Strange Feeling
March 15, 2008 – 11:18 pmBack in the day, I was shopping with a friend at a local thrift store when a piece of pottery caught my eye. I lifted it and looked for the maker’s mark, sure enough I found what I expected; the Eye of Horus and the initials SS for Steven Sowers. It was my fiends work. We decided that you know you have made an impression on the world when your goods have blended into he scenery, showing up at garage sales and thrift stores. Well, now I think I have made an impression on the world.
Meet Harry Dorman who, according to a Michigan Newspaper, “…has been a Wiccan priest for three years.”
While Harry looks fairly familiar, I think its just because he seems like a friendly enough chap. I can’t say that I actually recall meeting him. Oh, I am sure it is possible. Lots of people from Michigan visit my booth at the Ohio Renaissance Festival and I do merchant a bit in Michigan. But I don’t remember ever meeting him. So why do I mention this article and his name? Well take a gander at what is sitting on his altar. I think it is one of the black metal pentagrams that I’ve been making for years.
Now it could be one of the ones made by the man who gave me my start in metal forming and blacksmithing; Jim Walls. I can not be sure. When I purchased his business, he left that line of work and allowed me to continue some of his patterns; this is clearly one of those. It is a candle holder and incense burner. But I suspect this is one of mine due to he candle cups that are used. I do not recall Jim using candle cups large enough for full sized tapers. Additionally, the athame on the altar looks strikingly similar to a line of imported blades that I offer in addition to my own creations. Maybe it is just a coincidence, but Jim never sold imported blades and seeing the two together is just kind of striking.
It is a neat but somewhat strange feeling to run into a newspaper clipping and see what you suspect is your work in one of the photos. I think I am starting to understand what Steve observed years ago in that thrift store.
