Knives that I like

May 9, 2008 – 9:27 am

I have been very sick for many months. Details do not matter much. What is important, well to me and mine anyway, is that I am recovering. I am now on insulin (great help) and I am one operation away from being able to use my upper body properly again. Over the months that I have been out of it, I have managed to get some work done. But mostly, I have looked at what other people are doing. I thought I would share with people who follow my blog some of the knives I have found that I think sum up the type of things I like to do.

Knives that I like:

Photos L & M – Both listed simply as “One Piece Knife”

Similar to the above, but the sheath is very unique. Love it.

A Folder – I do not usually like folders. They look too machine made. I like this one.

Vermicellus – This is a flash page. I cant provide a link to the style. You click catalog and then hunting and then Vermicellus.

Cable Damascus – I love this one because of the way he left the twists from the cable in the blade. I think that is actually indentations. It might be pattern from the acid etch, but it doesn’t look it. It is the top knife. The one displayed with the cable from which this type of steel is forged.

Old File – This one was made from an old file and the smith left the file grooves on the back of the blade for a very unique look. Back in the day it was common to use old files because you couldn’t order small quantities of steel from knife supply shops. If a file worked well, you knew it was made well / good steel.

Necklace Knives – I like the idea of the sheath that shows the blade but protects the edge and tip. Not the most protective thing, but it shows off the Damascus pattern and these are just as much jewelry as they are knifes. The top one is great. I love the way he did the wrap on the handle, stitching it so that one can see the Damascus beneath. One major problem I see is oil that will fight rust and not harm the leather. My guess would be a clear wax.

Horse Shoe Knife & Rail Road Spike

The HorseShoe knife on this page is neat. I make something similar from horseshoes, but haven’t forge welded a proper blade to them. Instead I treat them kind of like railroad spikes. Not made from the best blade material but that is half the fun, making knives out of things you shouldn’t. I use a special quenchant which brings out some extra harness in the material. It is basically the legendary Super Quench with a bit of Kentucky Bourbon. I am dying to try it in straight Kentucky Bourbon just for the light show but cant bring myself to part with a whole bottle for the task.

The Railroad spike knife is an interesting idea. Instead of forge welding a proper blade to it, he forge welded and twisted some blade steel, creating a steel / railroad spike Damascus with a twist pattern.
